NowThis News cherry-picks quotes in article about Roe v. Wade brief

NowThis News published an article this week on the ongoing abortion debate in the court system, headlined, “200+ Members of Congress Urge Supreme Court to Overturn Roe v. Wade.”

The piece took the side of the pro-choice lobby and advocacy.

The article noted that 205 Republican lawmakers, and 2 Democrats, wrote a brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider the 1973 case that legalized abortion, known as Roe v. Wade. NowThis News unfairly maligned the brief’s signatories by pointing out that the “majority of which are men.” A common talking point of the pro-choice lobby is that men should not have an opinion on abortion as abortion does not affect their bodies and that the male “patriarchy” ought not have a say in such issues involving women.

For example, feminist activist Gloria Steinem told [1] Al Jazeera that the “patriarchy” opposes abortion because it gives women too much freedom and then compared antiabortion advocates to Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany.

NowThis News only quoted pro-choice sources in its article and ignored the antiabortion advocates’ side of the debate. It quoted Planned Parenthood statements without equal representation from antiabortion groups such as March for Life or Susan B. Anthony List. Instead of fair representation on the abortion debate, NowThis News readers received one side of the story, which is unfair and is an example of biased and partial journalism.
