In consecutive weeks, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) misled the American public on issues such as food stamps and paid family leave. In a recent hearing, Ocasio-Cortez said that dogs have longer maternity leave than American mothers.
In the House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing, Ocasio-Cortez explained that a dog with newborn puppies usually stays with them for about eight weeks until the puppies are adopted.
“So the market has decided that women and people who give birth deserve less time with their children than a dog,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“I think that that, at its core, has shown that the market has failed to treat people with dignity and basic respect. So when that happens, I think it’s our job as the public to redefine the rules of society and to treat people who give birth with the dignity they deserve.”
NowThis News quoted Ocasio-Cortez’s statement and did not offer any rebuttal to her comparison of dogs to human mothers nor her claims about paid family leave. The news website used the headline, “AOC Says Dogs Get Better Family Leave Than Women in the U.S.,” to hammer Ocasio-Cortez’s point home to its viewers.
However, contrary to NowThis News’s coverage, paid family leave is already being enacted on the state level and by employers in order to retain its workers in a tight labor market.
For example, the think tank Heritage Foundation said that eight states and the District of Columbia enacted state-based paid family leave programs, which cover 29 percent of all U.S. workers. Additionally, the think tank said that more employers are adding paid family leave to their list of benefits in order to retain their employees and hire new workers.
