Former vice president and 2020 Democratic Party presidential candidate Joe Biden sat down for an exclusive interview with NBC News’s Lester Holt to discuss foreign policy in light of escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.
While Biden criticized Trump’s foreign policy actions throughout the interview, NBC News did not address Biden’s own foreign policy history under the Obama administration.
Biden said that President Donald Trump has “lied so much” and that he doesn’t “give him [Trump] the benefit of the doubt of anything.”
The lethal airstrike, ordered by Trump, “takes us a heck of a lot closer to war,” he said.
NBC News neglected to ask Biden about his role in the Obama administration’s approval of drone strikes to kill targets, some of which killed American citizens. Typically, American citizens are afforded due process, but the lethal drone strikes ignored their rights as citizens. Some have claimed that at least six American citizens were killed by drone strikes during the Obama administration.
NBC News should get credit for asking at least one tough question: Holt asked Biden why Americans should trust him after Biden admitted he did not want Obama to issue the kill order against al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.
Instead, Biden was allowed to pivot from foreign policy and a question on his son’s ties to a Ukrainian oil company to demanding Trump to release at least one year of his tax returns. Biden told NBC News that he has released twenty-one years of tax returns and that Trump should release his returns to demonstrate that he is not a corrupt president.
In the end, NBC News’s interview with Biden failed to add context to Biden’s foreign policy history, which includes the contentious drone strike policy during the Obama administration.
