Newsweek, Daily Beast Mischaracterize McConnell Volunteer Photo

Newsweek and the Daily Beast falsely characterized Sen. Mitch McConnell’s campaign response to an offensive photo staged by campaign volunteers (not paid staff) as merely “boys will be boys.”

In a Facebook photo, the high school-age volunteers wearing “Team Mitch” t-shirts groped a cardboard cutout of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), an image that the McConnell campaign condemned and called a “demeaning act.” Yet the framing of the coverage of the episode by both Newsweek and The Daily Beast falsely claimed that McConnell’s team condoned the volunteers’ behavior.

“Your daily example of media malfeasance,” wrote Crenshaw. “This is the new normal of outrage culture: When the facts don’t warrant sufficient outrage, new facts are created to fill the gap.”

Crenshaw was responding to a conservative Twitter user upset by Newsweek and Daily Beast.

“So Daily Beast invented a quote from McConnell’s campaign, AOC attacked the invented quote, and then Newsweek reports on her attack on the invented quote,” wrote @AG_Conservative. “Hell of a job.”
