NBC News ignores ethics complaint filed against Omar

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) announced [1] on Twitter that she got married this week and her new husband is her political consultant, Tim Mynett. Her recent marriage to Mynett is not as simple as it may seem because she previously accused the media of undermining her marriage to then-husband Ahmed Hirsi and the rumors led to an investigation [2] of her use of campaign funds.

But NBC News, in covering news of Omar’s marriage to Mynett, did not mention the alleged campaign finance violation for misusing campaign funds. The news outlet only said that Mynett’s company “has worked with Omar’s campaign.”

NBC News bungled its handling of Omar’s recent history in its article. It should have outlined the potential campaign finance violations facing her office, considering that she is running for re-election this year.

In August 2019, Omar was accused [3] of having an affair with Mynett by Mynett’s then-wife Beth Mynett. Mynett accused her husband and the congresswoman of having an affair in court papers filed that month. The couple had been separated since April 2019 when Tim Mynett told his then-wife of his affair.

Her office was accused of improperly handling campaign funds to reimburse her alleged lover (now husband) Tim Mynett. The complaint suggested that Mynett’s payment from Rep. Omar may have been related to their romantic involvement. Although the Federal Election Commission is investigating the case, it is stalled [2] due to several vacancies.

Omar accused the media and conservatives of ginning up false accusations about the alleged affair. Her lawyer issued a statement that criticized the media for breaking news about the alleged affair. Part of the statement read, “Ilhan and Ahmed have been the object of speculation and innuendo from political opponents and the media…This has taken a significant toll on Ilhan, Ahmed, and their three children.” The statement continued, “As with all marriages, this is intensely personal and a difficult time for their family…Just like any other family navigating this kind of transition, Ilhan wishes to have their privacy respected for themselves and their children and will not be commenting any further.”

With her confirmation of her marriage to Tim Mynett, Omar confirmed that they were romantically involved and it debunked her past claims that the media made the rumors the “object of speculation and innuendo.”

It is also important to note that Omar never directly answered inquiries from the local newspaper, the Star-Tribune, about her previous marriage and whether she married her biological brother to help him obtain legal immigration status. PolitiFact summarized [4] the marriage controversy and cited the Star-Tribune, which said, “could neither conclusively confirm nor rebut the allegation that he is Omar’s sibling.”
