Accuracy in Media

A guest on MSNBC Wednesday has come under fire for her comments on Mollie Tibbetts, a college student murdered in Iowa.

The guest, Christina Greer, was responding to the report Tibbetts’ alleged killer is an undocumented immigrant. Greer dismissed Tibbetts as “a girl in Iowa” that “Fox News is talking about.” [UPDATE: The New York Times story that initially reported the suspect as undocumented has removed information about his immigration status. It remains unconfirmed.]

She also claimed Tibbetts’ death was getting more attention than Michael Cohen and Paul Manafort news.

Tibbetts went missing in Brooklyn, Iowa, on June 18. She was staying in her hometown for the summer with plans to return to the University of Iowa for her sophomore year.

Members of the FBI joined the search shortly after Tibbetts went missing to assist the local police department. Authorities did not locate her body until Tuesday, when the 24-year-old suspect led police to her body, which was in a nearby cornfield.

The suspect, Cristhian Bahena Rivera, is charged with first-degree murder and is being held on a federal immigration detainer. A preliminary hearing will take place August 31.
