While the mainstream media focuses on Iran, other news slipped through the cracks: The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court appointed an Obama administration lawyer to oversee reforms at the FBI as a part of a Department of Justice report that recommended the bureau reform its surveillance protocols.
The lawyer, David Kris, served as an assistant attorney general within the Department of Justice’s national security division under the Obama administration. Kris has been an outspoken defender of the controversial warrant against former Trump campaign associate Carter Page and the overall FISA court process.
While evidence debunked many of his defenses, such as the FBI did not act improperly when it did not disclose it had paid for the controversial Christopher Steele dossier, Kris remained firm in his contention that the FBI and FISA process was not at fault.
Now, Kris was appointed as an advisory position within FISA, which outraged Republican lawmakers and President Donald Trump. Kris consistently criticized Republicans for defending Trump and for Republicans’ criticism of FISA courts and the overall process. Trump tweeted, “You can’t make this up! David Kris, a highly controversial former DOJ official, was just appointed by the FISA Court to oversee reforms to the FBI’s surveillance procedures. Zero credibility. THE SWAMP!”

Fox News, the Washington Examiner, and the National Review covered Kris’s appointment and the controversy surrounding it. The mainstream media outlets have not written articles or analysis on it today. Considering Kris’s partisan leanings and his staunch defense of FISA, in addition to FISA’s role in the Russia investigation, it would make sense that the mainstream media would report on it.
Yet, there was mainstream media silence on the news, with only right-leaning outlets reporting on the implications of Kris’s appointment.
As much attention the media gave to the Russia investigation, which investigation cleared Trump of wrongdoing, it seemed that the media no longer wanted to report on the intricacies of how the Russia investigation came about. It was hypocritical for the media to hype the Russia investigation and then choose to ignore anything related to it, such as Kris’s appointment to advise the FBI on its reforms.
