Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) blamed Republicans for choosing 22 million job losses over correctly responding to the coronavirus pandemic. But Ocasio-Cortez was wrong, because it was the Democratic Party which stalled a small business relief bill in Congress — and major media outlets failed to fact check her.
Ocasio-Cortez told her audience, “Mass unemployment was a choice. We did not need to lose 20 million jobs. We didn’t.
“We had options and the option that we chose was to do nothing, despite the fact that we could have done something to save millions of jobs in this country,” Ocasio-Cortez said. She blamed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the Trump White House for not taking “bold action” to save American jobs.
However, she did not recognize that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stalled the most recent small business relief bill. Ocasio-Cortez also omitted that much of the Republican rhetoric focused on reopening the economy with some coronavirus restrictions in place.
