Media figures from both left and right praised liberal comedian Ellen DeGeneres for defending her friendship with former President George W. Bush, a Republican, however, the commentary leaves out that DeGeneres’ across-the-aisle hospitality doesn’t include President Donald Trump. It also leaves out the fact that Bush has called Trump a racist.
“Here’s the thing,” DeGeneres said on her nationally-syndicated talk show in response to liberal critics who didn’t like her friendship with Bush. “I’m friends with George Bush. In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have. We’re all different and I think that we’ve forgotten that that’s OK.”
The pair had been spotted sitting together smiling and watching a Dallas Cowboys/Green Bay Packers game in Texas.
“When I say ‘be kind to one another,’ I don’t mean only the people that think the same way that you do,” she continued. “I mean be kind to everyone. Doesn’t matter.”
DeGeneres, however, has sung a far different tune about acceptance and tolerance when it comes to President Trump. Even though she has hosted former Presidents Clinton and Obama on her show, she refuses to have President Trump.
“Because I’m not going to change his mind,” DeGeneres reportedly told Matt Lauer in 2017. “He’s against everything that I stand for. We need to look at someone else who looks different than us and believes in something that we don’t believe in and still accept them, and still let them have their rights.”
DeGeneres also used her participation in the children’s film “Finding Dory” to bash President Trump on immigration and national security.
“Even though Dory gets into America, she gets separated from her family,” DeGeneres told Vanity Fair. “But the other animals help Dory. Animals that don’t even need her, animals that don’t even have anything in common with her. They help her even though they’re completely different colors because that’s what you do when you see someone in need: you help them.”
DeGeneres has also reportedly donated tens of thousands of dollars to Democratic candidates and the Democratic Party.
