Accuracy in Media

CNN host Chris Cuomo misled his CNN viewers by airing a deceptively-edited video of a recent White House briefing. Cuomo used the clip to criticize President Donald Trump for solely acting as a cheerleader during a national crisis, but he did not mention that the clip was doctored.

The Daily Wire’s Ryan Saavedra highlighted that Cuomo aired a video clip which made it seem that Trump did not take action on the coronavirus due to the fear of upsetting Americans.

Cuomo’s video clip quoted Trump as saying, “The cases didn’t really build up for a while. You have to understand, I’m a cheerleader for this country. I don’t want to create havoc and shock and everything else. I’m not going to go out screaming, ‘This will happen, this will happen.’

“That’s exactly what leadership is. Anybody can tell people what they want to hear and make it easy,” Cuomo said. “And then you know what you get? Exactly where we are right now. That was the most asinine statement of leadership I have ever heard,” he concluded.

However, the full quote should have included Trump’s defense of his actions to close international travel. He said:

“But ultimately, when I was saying that, I was closing it down. I was obviously was concerned about it because I closed down our country to China, which was heavily infected. I then closed it down to Europe, that’s a big move, closing it down from China and then closing it down from Europe and then ultimately closing it down from the UK; and it was right about that time.”

Cuomo removed three sentences of Trump’s quote to portray Trump as a president of inaction. The full quote should have read as:

“The cases didn’t really build up for awhile. You have to understand, I’m a cheerleader for this country. I don’t want to create havoc and shock and everything else. But ultimately, when I was saying that, I was closing it down.”

“I was obviously was concerned about it because I closed down our country to China, which was heavily infected. I then closed it down to Europe, that’s a big move, closing it down from China and then closing it down from Europe and then ultimately closing it down from the UK; and it was right about that time.”

“I’m not going to go out screaming, ‘This will happen, this will happen.’”

Cuomo deliberately edited a video that removed important context from Trump’s White House briefing and mislead CNN’s viewers. CNN should push Cuomo to apologize and both him and the network should publicly apologize for the deceptively-edited video.
