Kanye West’s support for President Trump led to a CNN panel discussion in which West was called a “token Negro” and “what happens when Negroes don’t read.”

The panel then declared him mentally unfit to comment on the affairs of the day.

West, who was to meet with Trump on Thursday to discuss criminal justice reform and other topics, has been a vocal advocate for the president.

Bakari Sellers, a former member of Congress, said, “Kanye West is what happens when negroes don’t read. And we have this now, and now Donald Trump is going to use it and pervert it and he’s going to have someone who can stand with him and take pictures.”

Don Lemon, who anchored the segment, burst into laughter and remarked on the expression of shock on the face of Scott Jennings, a CNN contributor who also was on the panel.

“I’m just looking at Scott’s face,” Lemon said through giggles. “Scott’s like, ‘Wow. OK.’”

Tara Setmeyer, another CNN contributor, then explained to Jennings that the remark about West not being able to read was part of an old routine by black comic Chris Rock. “Go back and watch the old Chris Rock standups tonight,” she advised.

Lemon then said, “Maybe it’ll work, Tara.”

She responded, “Work for who? It’s not going to work in the black community. This is not the Kanye West of 2004. This isn’t the “College Dropout” album guy. What’s funny to me is to watch all these white people behind Donald Trump clapping away at the name of Kanye West when it wasn’t that long ago that Kanye West said that George W. Bush doesn’t like black people.”

“Doesn’t care,” Lemon interjected. “After Hurricane Katrina,” Setmeyer explained.

She then relaunched.

“Now, all of a sudden, Kanye, because he’s put on a MAGA hat, he’s an attention whore like the president. He’s all the sudden no the model spokesperson, the token Negro of the Trump administration? This is ridiculous. And no one should be taking Kanye West seriously. He clearly has issues.

“He’s already been hospitalized. Not to trivialize mental health issues, but obviously, Kanye has taken a turn in a very strange way. You read any of the interviews … It’s all over the place. So, this is not exactly the best representation, to Bakari’s point, especially on an issue as important as prison reform. There is a lot of other people who are much more well-versed on this issue and are serious.”

This is not the only time media has attempted to paint West as mentally ill for supporting the president.

On Hollyscoop, Chanel Hurlin said, “Fresh off the stage from his strange performance on SNL [Saturday Night Live, in which West donned his MAGA hat, praised Trump and said, to boos, that it was a Democratic Party plot to remove fathers from the home and create dependency], the rapper took to social media to share his thoughts about the 13th Amendment.

“Not so sure when this man will learn that you should think before you tweet to the world or better yet, get someone else to manage your posts. Kanye posted this selfie in a red cap saying Make America Great Again. And if that’s not enough to make your blood boil, just wait for the actual tweets.”

Allyson Camarota, also of CNN, suggested West is not mentally competent.

“I just am wondering if it’s time to start worrying about Kanye because he does go on, sometimes, nonsensical rants,” Camarota said. “He has taken a break for some stress-related issues, so I’m concerned.”
