CNN chose to conduct a media blackout over the news that its president, Jeff Zucker, is open to running for New York City mayor in 2021.

In an interview with New York Times columnist Ben Smith, Zucker left the door open for running for mayor because of the potential challenge of the opportunity.

“New York City is going to need a very strong mayor in the aftermath of this, and I always like a challenge,” Zucker told Smith.

The Hill and Washington Examiner reported on Zucker’s comments about a potential political career, but CNN blacked out any news of Zucker’s comments or the interview itself.

CNN’s blackout of any Zucker-related comments or news called into question whether CNN is trying to hide its chief executive’s political ambitions.

Zucker has been CNN president since 2013 and has hinted at possible political campaigns in the past. Zucker renewed his contract with CNN in 2018, and that contract expires at the end of this year.
