CNN, for the second time in three months, promoted Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s theory about a not-so-peaceful transfer of power if President Donald Trump loses on Election Day. Biden claimed that if he won the presidency, Trump would refuse to vacate the White House and peacefully transfer power to him.
The cable news network headlined the Biden theory, “Biden ‘absolutely convinced’ military would escort Trump from White House if he loses and refuses to leave.” Biden said that his “single greatest concern” is that Trump would “try to steal this election.” He added that he is “absolutely convinced” that the U.S. military would escort Trump out of the White House to ensure a peaceful transfer of power.
It is not the first time Biden has gone public with the theory; he also spoke of this theory in April. At the time, Biden said, “Mark my words: I think he is gonna try to kick back the election somehow, come up with some rationale why it can’t be held.”
Neither CNN or Biden presented evidence of this theory of a failure to peacefully transfer power if Biden won the presidential election. CNN did not call Biden’s theory a “conspiracy theory,” as it does with Trump’s many theories. For example, a November 2019 CNN headline said, “Debunking the Trump-backed conspiracy theory on Ukraine election meddling.” CNN did not give Biden’s theory similar treatment to Trump’s theories.
