Accuracy in Media

BuzzFeed News clearly favored Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden over incumbent President Donald Trump in its recent media coverage.

The website headlined its praise for Biden, “Joe Biden Isn’t Making A New Argument — But His Argument Is Lining Up With The Crisis.”

BuzzFeed explained that Biden’s “familiar theme” was to make the campaign more than his candidacy. It used words such as “healer” to convey how Biden’s campaign wanted to portray itself as more human and goal-oriented than solely winning the presidency.

BuzzFeed News called Biden’s speech about the ongoing Floyd protests “the sharpest connection Biden has made between his grief and this moment.” The article read more like a puff piece than an insightful analysis of Biden’s candidacy.

Contrast BuzzFeed’s praise for Biden to its condemnation of Trump, where the website has multiple articles critical of the president.

One headline read, “People Are Taking To The Streets To Protest Police Brutality Amid Trump’s Threat To Unleash The Military,” while another said, “Peaceful Protesters Were Gassed Outside The White House So Trump Could Get A Photo Op At A Church.”

Though criticism of Trump’s photo-op in the nation’s capital was legitimate, BuzzFeed News approached Biden-related news with much more care and nuance than Trump-related news.

BuzzFeed News did question whether Biden’s campaign approach during the beginning of the pandemic was adequate and had the headline, “Where is Joe Biden?” But it was the only Biden-related article that criticized the candidate.

Another BuzzFeed article highlighted Biden’s voter outreach attempt with the optimistic headline, “Joe Biden Has Struggled With Young People. He Has A New Plan To Win Them.”
