Bloomberg News Announces It Will Not Investigate Any 2020 Democratic Candidates

Because Michael Bloomberg is now running for the Democratic nomination for president, Bloomberg News has now decided it won’t do any investigative journalism against any 2020 Democrats, even while it “will continue to investigate the Trump administration as the government of the day.”

“We will continue our tradition of not investigating Mike (and his family and foundation) and we will extend the same policy to his rivals in the Democratic primaries,” Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait reportedly wrote in a memo to staff obtained by Reuters. [1]

In the memo, Micklethwait also reportedly wrote that some of Bloomberg’s editorial board members will be taking a leave of absence to work on Bloomberg’s campaign.

“We will suspend the Board, so there will be no unsigned editorials,” Micklethwait wrote.

Former Bloomberg Businessweek editor and Washington bureau chief Megan Murphy called the policy “ridiculous” and said “This is not journalism.” [2]

“For the record, I was present[ed] with a near-identical ‘memo’ during his 2016 flirtation. And I was very clear that I would quit the second it ever saw the light of day,” Murphy tweeted. [3]

“It is truly staggering that *any* editor would put their name on a memo that bars an army of unbelievably talented reporters and editors from covering massive, crucial aspects of one of the defining elections of our time,” she continued. [5] “Staggering.”
