Ted Turner wallows in Hitlerian propaganda modeIronically, while comparing FoxNews' popularity with Hitler's and characterizing their news as "propaganda," Turner is engaging in one of the most fundamental and unimaginative techniques of the language of political propaganda and persuasion: Comparing anything one dislikes to Hitler, the SS, Goebbels, Nazis, etc. The Hitler reference is such a staple for propaganda, that it's surprising journalists don't make note of that fact. Ridiculous comparisons like this only serve to make the user appear to be downgrading the evil of the Nazi regime. Even tossing about the term "holocaust" (as so many groups do today) as though it were a new trendy slogan, is becoming too easy for individuals and groups, and it represents disrespect for the victims of the real thing. On another Hitlerian note: It amazes me when I run into Americans who voice concern that the US is suddenly, for the first time, being compared to Nazi Germany. That's nothing new. I can remember when I was about 4 or 5 being with my family in Naples, Italy when we found our white Volkswagen vandalized, windows smashed and tires slashed and spray-painted red with the slogan: USA= It's old propaganda and when people, including that old geezer Turner think they can 'distinguish' themselves by a facile tossing about of Hitlerian terms, they come off looking just plain dumb. Not to mention insincere: Drudge has a link to a previous apology Turner made to the ADL for comparing Rupert Murdoch to Hitler. |
