It may be easy to laugh when the likes of Gore, Daschle and/or the Clintons complain about the ‘bias’ of conservative commentators [who themselves make no pretense of being objective]. Those who suggest that there is bias in news reporting on the other hand, are typically characterized by the same crowd as paranoid kooks. There is however, a sinister aspect to this Leftist whining that merits exploration.

Washington journalists have voted overwhelmingly Democratic for well over a generation, at a rate clearly not reflective of the general population. Protestations to the contrary notwithstanding, a person’s perspective is bound to color the way a story is told.

Nonetheless, a sincere commitment to trust the audience and tell the whole story would serve to dampen the effects of bias considerably. A conscious editorial decision to seek out and employ reporters with a diversity of viewpoints would also allow the public the opportunity for more balanced news. Apparently the Dominant Media have chosen not to do this.

Those who wish to confirm or deny allegations of journalistic bias are invited to do news database searches of their own. Most people don’t need to conduct any research to know that there is a Leftist journalistic bias. They need only peruse what is offered as objective news. Consequently a hunger for what is omitted has been created, which is nicely fulfilled by conservative commentary. Meanwhile, the elites saturate the culture with Leftist pedagogy, thus continuing to alienate prospective patrons.

Additionally, a wide gulf in fundamental values tectonically separates Big Media from its target audience. The majority of Americans are committed to the survival and growth of freedom. They hold that individuals are responsible for their own actions. They believe that people are entitled to keep what they earn and are ultimately obligated to secure their own welfare and protection.

Our Betters for their part are suspicious of freedom in the hands of the unsophisticates who dwell outside of their coterie. They contemplate the prospect of a self-sufficient populace with a combination derision and fear. In a free society, the natural differences that exist between people can manifest themselves profoundly in terms of relative wealth. This phenomenon is characterized by the Left as evidence of inequities that must be remedied through redistribution. They further hold that most people cannot help what they do, are all ultimately victims and should thus be protected from the consequences of their own actions.

Nixon was right when he spoke of a Silent Majority that exists in America. The core of our society is composed of the likes of architects, accountants, truck drivers and fire fighters. These are people who are not privileged to repose in the rarefied atmosphere of the cultural elites. They are instead consigned to fend for themselves armed with only their common sense and basic decency. They may never have read Robert Heinlein or even heard of dialectic materialism, but they know right from wrong. They also know when someone’s trying to sell them snake oil.

Consequently, such people are despised by the Leftist elites as bourgeois Neanderthals. They are also hated for their solid values. The Gores and Daschles of the world consider these people [who constitute the heart, soul, flesh and blood of this nation] to be the main obstacles to the realization of their plans.

Furthermore, they know that they cannot win in an open debate with an informed adversary. Reason is not on their side. That is why we won’t be hearing Hillary exploring feminism with Laura Ingraham. Thomas Sowell could easily dispense with the combined intellectual forces of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Louis Farrakhan while at the same time doing a crossword puzzle. Imagine George Stephanopoulos debating the finer points of economics with Walter Williams or Bill himself arguing the law with G. Gordon Liddy. We can only dream.

When Leftists characterize those who question their point of view as serving to foment violence, their actual objective is telegraphed. Their true aim is to close the debate on the subject, thus making the ‘Correct’ position the Official one. This tactic is a tried-and-true favorite.

Rush Limbaugh was held liable for creating the mindset Timothy McVeigh needed in order to perpetrate the Oklahoma City bombing. More recently, he and others have been similarly blamed for threats against certain public figures. Methodically a case is being made to curb opponents of the Leftist Agenda. If successful, criticism of certain officials and their policies will be shown to be dangerous to public order. Legislation would soon follow.

Most of the would-be Philosopher Kings who aspire to midwife our society into Xanadu do not intentionally seek to tyrannize. They truly believe that the Great Unwashed must be guided through a phase that would necessarily include the benevolent manipulation of education and information. That is why they typically react so hysterically when confronted with the impudence of a contrary viewpoint, especially when disseminated to a wide audience.

The concentration of the power [into the hands of fallible human beings] that would be necessary to accomplish such social engineering has been tried before. So far, the results have been less than encouraging. Wanting of a plausible alternative, we may just have to muddle through the messiness that naturally attends freedom and trust in the ultimate wisdom of the American people.
