Mr. Kevin Martin
Chairman
Federal Communications Commission
445 12th Street, SW
Washington, DC 20554
Dear Mr. Martin:
You were recently asked about “talk of trying to re-institute the FCC’s Fairness Doctrine” and whether you would support that. Your reply was, “No. The commission eliminated the doctrine in 1987. Doing so has made for a lot of opportunities in things like talk radio.” That was it. You did not challenge any of the Democratic proposals to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine or make a strong statement in favor of the First Amendment. We need you to do so. We also need studies from the FCC on how the abolition of the Fairness Doctrine has facilitated the exercise of free speech rights in this country.
