Senator Richard Lugar
306 Hart Senate Office Building.
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Lugar:

Citing Russian claims to the Arctic, you insist that we should run to the U.N. and ratify the Law of the Sea Treaty in order to protect our rights to the natural resources in the region. In fact, Americans discovered the North Pole, and Russian polar experts have acknowledged that fact. Recognizing U.N. authority in this area would dissolve historic U.S. claims to the Pole, the ice and water surrounding it, and the seabed. Our answer to the Russian claim should be to build more ships to defend American interests. We are down to 276 ships, from a high of 594 under President Reagan. Please, Senator, defend U.S., not U.N., interests in this important area.
