The Honorable John Snow
Secretary of the Treasury

Dear Mr. Snow:

Rep. Connie Mack had urged you in a letter to reject a proposal being considered by the Group of Eight (G8) to impose an international tax on airline travel. However, the Reuters news agency reported that you said that if other countries wanted to go ahead and look at proposals to fund aid via this mechanism the United States was not going to object. As a result, the G8 communiqué included a reference to G8 members studying the feasibility of imposing this global tax. Even more global tax proposals will be put on the table for President Bush to consider at the world summit at U.N. headquarters in September. It is time for the U.S. to vigorously oppose these measures. Will you now do so?
