Mr. Michael K. Young
Chairman, U.S. Commission on International
Religious Freedom

Washington, D.C. 20002

Dear Mr. Michael K. Young:
Thank you for exposing the anti-freedom provisions of the new constitution of Afghanistan. You said it threatens to institutionalize a “Taliban-lite” regime there. Our soldiers are risking and sacrificing their lives to bring freedom to the people, not to help establish an authoritarian Islamic state. We urge you and the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom not only to press for religious freedom in Afghanistan but in Iraq. Islamic extremists must not be allowed to dominate the government in either country. You must tell the President that if he wants to promote freedom and democracy in the Middle East, he has to start with Afghanistan and Iraq.
