Dear Dan:
Your July 30 story on Soviet active measures and the countermeasures taken by our government to combat them was critical of some of the measures taken by our government in monitoring certain groups. You brought up Soviet active measures, focusing on a Soviet forgery of a racist flyer supposedly put out by the KKK. It was designed to disrupt the Los Angeles Olympic games.
I am reminded that you were taken in by a Soviet active measure-the story that the U.S. military was responsible for the creation and spread of the AIDS virus. I understand that even though former Soviet officials have admitted that this was a fake story, you have never publicly admitted that you were fooled by them. That story is still being spread by a writer named Leonard Horowitz. Who could better expose him than you, one who fell for that lie 14 years ago? Exposing him would be a good way to make amends.
