Dear Mr. Downie:

I was sorry to read that your paper had published an error-riddled news story about what was described as a "a decade-long war" carried out by the FBI against Senator Al Gore Sr. in the 1950s and '60s. This was supposed to have been based on FBI files on the Senator that were released recently.

I hope that before this card reaches you, the Post will have published a correction of the many errors in that article. I am writing to suggest that you go further and reassess the Post's hostility toward J. Edgar Hoover, the director who made the FBI the most highly respected law enforcement body in the country. You could start by publishing a review of "The Real J. Edgar Hoover" by Ray Wannall. He served under Hoover for 30 years and like most of those who knew him well, he still holds him in the highest esteem. That cannot be said of his successors. Isn't it time for a reappraisal by the Post?
