WASHINGTON — Rebels and government forces continue to fight in eastern Ukraine as shelling hit both rebel strongholds in Luhansk and Donetsk.
Mortar rounds hit a northern part of Donetsk and caused some damage in the area such as apartment buildings. The rebels control the city’s administration, who said that nine residents were killed in the shelling. In response, the Ukrainian government denied that it was directly targeting civilians.
Volunteer fighters sympathizing with the Ukrainian government engaged in fighting outside Donetsk and about nine of them were killed.
