Twitter to integrate ads into interface

SILICON VALLEY, California — This past Wednesday, the popular social media platform Twitter has announced it will integrate advertisement software into its platform.
Twitter plans to partner with Adobe Systems INc., Salesforce Inc., Hootsuite, SHIFT and TBG Global. The news comes as Twitter is preparing for its own initial public offering (IPO) in the coming months.
This ads application programming interface, or commonly known as API, gives advertisers the ability to connect their existing ad software into their Twitter account to create automated ads on the SMS-based Twitter platform.
To show potential investors that it can create revenue, this effort is the latest in several previous efforts to increase revenue for the social media platform. Last year, marketers are now allowed to target Twitter users based on their profile and perceived interests as well as location.
Before that, Twitter made money solely off of “promoted” messages, where if users clicked or retweeted it Twitter would get paid. This new API interface allows advertisers to avoid the menial task of manually rewriting their tweets and advertisements for their promoted tweets.
In 2013, Twitter’s ad revenues are expected to grow nearly 90 percent to $545 million, according to eMarketer which noted that Facebook Inc. experienced similarly rapid growth after opening its API to advertisers in 2011.
