WASHINGTON — Martial law was officially imposed on the residents of the eastern city of Donetsk on July 16, which comes as little surprise to observers of the civil war.
The Kyiv Post reported that the separatists have imposed martial law in the city, to guard against the Ukrainian government. The curfew will run throughout the city between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Instead, Donetsk residents will receive Russian news channels like Rossiya 24.
Now, pro-Russia separatists have seen their stronghold of Slaviansk fall after heavy fighting with the Ukrainian government. Having retreated to Donetsk, the rebels are digging in for a prolonged fight. The same applies for the city of Luhansk, where rebels have also built barricades.
