WASHINGTON — Pope Francis, leader of the Roman Catholic Church, inducted 19 new cardinals while former pope Benedict was in attendance.
Reuters reported that Pope Francis urged unity among the cardinals and to avoid political infighting and bickering. Reuters called Benedict a “scandal-plagued predecessor” in their brief report.
Benedict’s appearance was the first since his resignation a year ago and created an interesting situation of having a former pope and a current one attending the same papal rites.
The church has over 1.2 billion members, and has survived rocky scandals over the years.
