WASHINGTON — Hints of irony abound in the story about a recent global warming research expedition gone wrong, when their ship was stuck in thick ice in Antarctica.

global warming research in iceReuters reported that the U.S. is sending a heavy icebreaker to help free one Russian and one Chinese icebreaker trapped in the Antarctica ice.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the ships will get there by January 12th and will take between 2-3 days to finish their rescue mission. Those on the Russian ship Akademik Shokalskiy were global warming researchers that left from New Zealand, yet the media hides that fact. The researchers were going to follow the path of Australian explorer Douglas Mawson and document if ice had melted away due to global warming.

The ship left November 28th and got stuck, forcing the crew and researchers to spend New Year’s aboard a trapped ship until the researchers were rescued this past week.
