WASHINGTON — A Mexican prison break went poorly for the prison breakers as a gunfight killed nine people.
Reuters reported that the gunfight took place in a state prison in the state of Guerrero, which has been ridden by gang violence lately.
Six gunmen entered the prison, let in by guards because the gunmen were wearing police uniforms. Prison guards thought they were conducting a typical prisoner delivery. Things went wrong when the gunmen began their attack, according to the state prosecutor.
The state attorney general’s office said:
“Once inside the prison, the armed group began an attack on inmates and then on guards in a security tower, where four prisoners and five attackers were killed”
One prison guard was wounded and an alleged gunmen was also hospitalized with gunshot wounds. The dead were inmates and gunmen.
