Assad forces suffer setback as major air base falls to rebels

ALEPPO, Syria — The military strategy of the pro-Assad forces in Syria has suffered another staggering defeat, according to news reports. Yesterday, a major air base near the northern city Aleppo fell to opposition forces.
The air base is located between the major commercial central hub of Syria and the eastern oil and wheat producing areas lying in the eastern region. But, in most of the other major fighting areas in Syria, a stalemate has ensued between the opposition and pro-Assad forces.
Meanwhile, negotiations have stalled with the opposition willing to settle on the future of Syria. But, pro-Assad supporters have balked at the chance to meet in a neutral location to negotiate, something that the opposition has suggested. In the words of an opposition official, the negotiations apparently will have to take place on Syrian soil.
The Assad regime wants to negotiate only with more centrist opposition figures, but their arrest of noted centrist leader Abdel-Aziz al-Khayyer last year drove the remaining centrists out of the country.
The civil war, which has claimed up to 60,000 lives, continues to rage in the suburbs of Damascus and parts of Aleppo and other major cities. It seems that any effort to reach a peace deal will take much longer than previously anticipated.
