Enviornmentalists and officials at the U.N. are growing concerned that the Senate will not pass a climate change bill in time for the December Copenhagen summit.

A significant Senate delay on the climate bill being debated on Capitol Hill would most likely diminish U.S. clout abroad and set back international global warming negotiations scheduled in December, warn environmentalists, Democratic aides and international negotiators.
“There’s a real danger that the international deal has less ambition because the U.S. is not able to come to an agreement that convinces countries that we’re serious about solving climate change,” said John Coequyt, senior Washington representative for the Sierra Club’s global warming and energy program. “That’s the biggest risk right now.”
Chances that a bill will pass Congress before the Dec. 7-18 United Nations climate summit in Copenhagen slimmed over the August recess. And already, experts say, U.N. officials have been lowering expectations for the talks, which are aimed at strengthening and continuing the landmark climate change accords approved in 1997 in Kyoto.
“Copenhagen has to be viewed as a very important step. Would it be overoptimistic to say that it would be the final one? Of course,” U.N. Development Chief Helen Clark told the Financial Times last week. “If there’s no deal as such, it won’t be a failure. I think the conference will be positive, but it won’t dot every ‘i’ and cross every ‘t.’”
U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon told the 150 governments at the World Climate Conference last week that time was running out for a new climate deal.
“We need rapid progress,” he said. “Our foot is stuck on the accelerator, and we are heading towards an abyss.”
Democratic aides say the full Senate will not turn its attention to the climate bill until the contentious health care debate is resolved — a process that some believe will take until the end of the year.
Conservatives are not be in any hurry to see a bill passed and the longer the health care debate lingers the better so that they can keep gathering data to debunk the percieved dangers of global warming.
With a large majority in the Senate it would be a major embarrassment to the Democrats if they can’t get a bill passed this year. But as the health care debate has shown, nothing is as easy as it seems.

It is becoming clearer and clearer in the face of a ten year record of no warming but rather cooling, allowing facts to be obscured by the pro warming group. Such a move on the part of this group underscores how the issue is political not scientific. Control and power is the name of the game played by anti-americans, radical environmentals, one world advocates and the radical left all in the name of saving the world from the excesses of the capitalist world.
Boy these Democrats are sure in a rush!
Maybe they don’t want the world to learn that Al Gore’s Nobel prize was in total error!
Maybe they don’t understand that the currently greatly reduced level of sunspot activity is actually resulting in global COOLING!
Note the increased use of the term “climate change” to reduce the need to account for lower thermometer readings”
Of course the climate is changing -as it always has and always will.
Who was it who decreed that 1995 was an optimal year and that there should never again be any fluctuation?
We are always either emerging from the last ice age -or entering the next one. I remember as a geography student in the late 1960s reading scientific papers supporting global cooling by just as distinguished panels of academics as those now heralding warming.
The point is -we don’t KNOW! It takes a few hundred years to detect a genuine trend -and none of us so far has had the time. Ask me in 2050 (when I will be 110!)
