Whatever Dan Rather may say -we must always remember that he was delighted to present falsified information regarding George W. Bush’s military background to the public as fact!
People in a position of public trust as Rather was -are not ALLOWED to lie!
That is the eternal essence of his problem. He lied -and his reputation is forever soiled! He cannot remove the stain -because he can never eradicate the ill-effect he had on American history.
Although I hate to admit it -the same is true of Walter Cronkite.
Although he was a childhood idol of mine -he too lied -and had an impact on American history that is almost beyond belief!
That is why we need “fact checkers” -and we need them NOW! And we need them to have the capacity to spread the results of their investigations worldwide -INSTANTLY!
It is not good enough for us to discover lies months or years after they are spread. We need to discover them instantly -and stop their spread -and punish the spreaders.
Dan Rather and Walter Cronkite may have started off meaning well -but they came to believe their own lies. In so doing they damaged our country.
We cannot continue to tolerate this -yet Rick Sanchez and Wolf Blitzer and a host of others continue to follow the precedent set by Rather and Cronkite -with impunity!
We must regain honesty in the media. We fail to do so at our own peril!
