The New York Times will air its first ever television ad during the Academy Awards this Sunday with a spot that targets the Trump administration, titled “The Truth.”
Here are some sample statements from the ad. They appear in rapid order on the screen:
“The truth is alternative facts are lies”
“The truth is the media is dishonest”
“The truth is a woman should dress like a woman”
“The truth is his refugee policy is a backdoor Muslim ban”
The ad ends with a series of changing statements: “The truth is hard/the truth is hard to know/the truth is more important than ever.”
President Trump has frequently attacked the Times for its coverage of his campaign and his administration, calling the paper “fake news” and “failing” in various tweets.
The Oscars will be the perfect venue for the Times ad since it is widely expected that the awards show will be more of an anti-Trump tirade than a celebration of Hollywood’s filmmaking achievements over the past year.
