New “Today Show” Executive Producer: “We Hate Being Number Two”

In an interview with Broadcasting & Cable’s Andrea Morabito, new Today Show executive producer Don Nash expressed optimism about the future of the show and told her that the staff hates being number two:
How do you feel about the chemistry among your current hosts?
I feel like there’s an awesome chemistry between all seven of our anchors. I think this is a group that genuinely likes to be around each other, and we all have the same goal in mind, which is just to do a great show every morning. It is among the most functional on air teams I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a lot of different teams come and go on this show, but this group is clicking like I’ve never seen a group click before, and I truly mean that. And I think, unfortunately, a lot of that is getting lost in some of the snarky press that we’re reading about.
Has that been motivating to the staff?
It has. One thing I’ve got to say I’m most proud of with this staff is, they haven’t let this bumpy period get them down. We all hate being No. 2. And I don’t know a single person out there that isn’t fighting as hard as they can to help get this show back to its rightful place.
Nash, who is a 23-year veteran of the program, was promoted last month to executive producer. He has a big challenge ahead of him as he tries to regain the top spot that the show held for 16 years until this past summer.
While Nash says that there is an “awesome chemistry” between the show’s anchors, there have been numerous reports of rifts between Matt Lauer, who many people blame for helping to create the situation that led to Today’s ratings collapse, and his fellow hosts.
NBC News executive are eager to restore Today to its former ratings dominance, as the show has been the crown jewel of the news division, generating profits that have dwarfed its competitors. But those profits were built on the advertising revenue that befits the number one morning show on broadcast television, and are sure to fall as Today plays second fiddle to ABC’s Good Morning America.
Nash has been tweaking the show. But short of a major overhaul, it’s doubtful that he will be able to make much headway against GMA in the long run.
