Accuracy in Media

NBC-AdNBC took out full page ads in The New York Times and Wall Street Journal on Wednesday to celebrate their number-one status in several television categories, but stretched the truth when it came to listing the Today show as “#1 Morning News.”

That probably came as quite a shock to ABC, where their Good Morning America program has been considered to be the number-one morning news show for the last six quarters after they dethroned Today from its long-time perch at the top.

It turns out that when you read the fine print, NBC used the ratings in the 18-49 demo—where Today has been number one for 46 weeks, not the key 25-54 demo, which advertisers focus on and which the true ratings crown is based on.

While NBC didn’t lie, they surely deceived the public, and at the very least they should have placed a big fat asterisk by that claim.
