Michelle Obama Stumps for Gay Vote

By Don  |  June 27, 2008

Michelle Obama left no doubt last night where her husband stood on gay and lesbian issues.

From ABC News.

Michelle Obama addressed the Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council Gala in New York City Thursday night and renewed her husband's promise to repeal federal policies that she says limit the rights of gays and lesbians.

"Barack believes that we must fight for a world as it should be.  A world where together we work to reverse discriminatory laws like D.O.M.A. (Defense of Marriage Act) and Don't Ask Don't Tell," Mrs. Obama said, addressing an audience of 250 people at a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee.

D.O.M.A stipulates that states are not required to recognize same sex marriages, even if the marriages are recognized in another state.  The law also states that the federal government define marriage as a legal union between a man and a woman.  "Don't Ask Don't Tell", as it is commonly called, allows gay men and women to serve in the military but it prevents them from talking about their sexuality openly.

Last week Sen. Obama, D-Ill., told ABC News’ Jake Tapper that while he believes marriage is between a man and a woman, “these are decisions that need to be made at a state and local level.”

Tonight Obama's wife echoed that sentiment.

"He has said that the federal government should not stand in the way of the states that want to decide for themselves how best to pursue equality for gay and lesbian couples, whether that means a domestic partnership, a civil union, or a civil marriage," she said.

Don't forget to add this to the long list of things Obama would change if he wins in November.

I think all people should be treated fairly. I am in disbelief in how a Christian can support what is un-Christian. D.O.M.A is not discriminatory - marriage has always been defined as a union between a husband (male) and a wife (female). To see anyone of any faith push aside the basic tenants of that particular faith shows that they’re more concerned in their own agenda versus what they supposed believe.

I can’t stand the constant misuse of the word “discrimination.”  Political correctness and the victimhood mentality are unravelling our culture.  Obviously I’m not suprised that the subversive Obama and/or his wife would throw the “discrimination” word around when talking about their ideas.

You’d think this stuff would be getting really old with the voters by now, but as someone commented after another AIM article recently, so many young people and minorities have been indocrinated by the liberal school systems, etc, that the victim mentality is commonplace.

The word “unity” is also a charade, of course.  Giving special recognition and considerations to certain groups or identities of people doesn’t create unity at all.  The ultimate result is that our culture and society just devolve to the lowest common denominator.  How tragic!

As a Christian, I can only pray that people who base their world view on the teachings of Jesus take a moment to actually listen to what he had to say to us all. Love one another. A simple idea that is yet difficult to grasp in the face of our fear of rejection, alienation, and death.

To say that anyone who advocates for equal consideration where civil unions are concerned for all our fellow citizens is “Giving special recognition and considerations to certain groups or identities of people” is blatantly false. It is not only following the most basic tennets of our Constitution, it is our most immediate response to the teachings of Jesus. We must let go of the ideas which have only served to perpetuate our differences and begin to embrace the subtlety of our differences. Open your hearts and see that no one wants to take anything away from you. You are whole, perfect and complete. Love one another, support that same love in the lives of others, and be free.
