The mainstream media who solidly backed Barack Obama’s candidacy is now profiting from his victory with a plethora of products for sale.

“Are the media capable of merchandizing the moment, packaging a president-elect for profit?” asks The Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz today. “Yes, they are.”
Although Kurtz’ story focuses mainly on newspapers and magazines, there are a few networks preparing special memorabilia about Sen. Barack Obama.
“Perhaps it was the announcement that NBC News is coming out with a DVD titled ‘Yes We Can: The Barack Obama Story.’ Or that ABC and USA Today are rushing out a book on the election,” writes Kurtz.
The NBC DVD, currently available for pre-order in the NBC store, runs four hours and ships on December 15 (just in time for the holidays!).
In an otherwise dreary time for the media the Obama victory has given them a tremendous lift.

Isn’t that what Free Market enterprise is all about? Just follows Rule No. 1, The only things that sell are Sex and Bull ####. Tis up to you what you want to buy or forego.

While a lot of paranoids, conspiracists, and ideologues of all stripes typically rail about the media - as with everything else today - it’s all about the money, the market share, the bottom line. And, as with every other kind of business that sells a product or a service - the media will promote whatever their market researchers tell them will sell best. Right now, the Hula Hoop Du Jour is the new president.

Uh, that’s what the media does. It’s not a charity you know.
