The Republican National Convention in St. Paul next month is shaping up to be a real dull affair.
From the Politico.
While excitement is building for a Democratic Party convention capped by Barack Obama’s historic acceptance speech before a sold-out, 75,000-seat football stadium, the GOP convention the following week is shaping up to be a considerably more staid affair, marked by the conspicuous absence of many of the usual convention attendees.
Republicans aren’t exactly planning to avoid the convention in droves. But compared to past conventions, lawmakers, lobbyists and candidates aren’t beating a path to St. Paul either.
Of the 12 Republicans running in competitive Senate races — five of whom are incumbents —- only three have said they will be attending the convention. Six are definite no-shows, and three are on the fence.
“Nobody likes a funeral,” said a Senate Republican press secretary who spoke on the condition of anonymity, citing “the overall climate of general malaise about the party” as the reason for hesitance on the part of Republicans.
On the House side, according to a report in The Hill, during a July 31 conference call National Republican Campaign Committee Chairman Tom Cole of Oklahoma discouraged congressional hopefuls from attending, saying that doing so would potentially be a “waste of time.”
At least a handful of Republican incumbents, ranging from vulnerable incumbents such as Jon C. Porter and Dean Heller, both of Nevada, to safe veteran members such as Jim Sensenbrenner Jr. of Wisconsin and Sue Myrick of North Carolina, have also decided to stay home this year.
The GOP can’t keep the genie in the bottle much longer. A dull candidate in John McCain, a less than exciting venue in St. Paul which isn’t helped by sky high hotel rates and the fact that the party is facing more losses in the House and Senate make it hard to justify the expense of attending.

Damn, seems like all the Hookers headed to St. Paul are going to be disappointed in their share of the monies spent.

Aww… poor Republicans. In the words of Jerry Seinfeld, “That’s a shame.”

There will definitely be more excitement at the Rally for the Republic over in Minneapolis, taking place at the same time, at the Target Center. (http://www.rallyfortherepublic.com and http://www.campaignforliberty.com) People are gearing up for it, coordinating nationwide carpools and chartered bus rides, offering their homes for lodging and reserving blocks of hotel rooms. Lots of conservative speakers, musicians, etc..Almost 9,000 tickets have been sold already! Check it out!

Ron Paul is The Only man fit for President. He’ll return America to what it was founded on, A Representative Republic. Not a Democracy run by
PACs and Corporates and Eastern European Communists.

Ron Paul’s getting my vote this November, even if I have to write in his name.

Why am I not surprised that it is going to be a snoozer??? We have let a bunch of morons take over our party. How did this happen? I just do not understand.

Rick,
The morons (NeoCons) took over our party because too many Republican voters do not logically and critically analyze the disastrous big government, big spending, nation-building policies that the Party has latched onto during the past 20 years.
If the voters did do their homework, real Conservatives like Pat Buchanan and Ron Paul would have been the nominees instead.
People get the government they deserve.

Maybe Rep Mike Pence can liven things up at the convention by giving a long speech praising Rep Kucinich like he did at the recent house impeachment hearings. Or maybe Sen Brownback can give a stem winder on the wonderful virtues of Pelosi and Durban for pushing embryonic stem cell recearch like he did on the Senate floor awhile back.
