Accuracy in Media

A new poll by Gallup released on Wednesday shows that the American public’s trust and confidence in the media has fallen to the lowest point in the poll’s 44-year history.

Thirty-two percent of respondents in the Gallup poll said they have “a great deal” or “a fair amount” of trust in the mass media, a drop of eight percentage points from 2015.

Trust in the media has been steadily dropping over the last decade, and last reached 50% in 2005.

Trust in the media among Democrats slipped slightly from 55% to 51%, and among Libertarians 33% to 30%. But it plummeted among Republicans from 32% to 14%, and is “easily the lowest confidence” they have had in 20 years according to Gallup.

That drop can probably be attributed to the media’s coverage of the 2016 presidential campaign, which has been typically anti-Republican.

Older Americans are more trusting of the media than younger Americans, but the level of trust has declined among both age groups. In the 18 to 49 age group, 26% (down from 36%) say they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media, and in the 50-plus age group 38% (down from 45%) feel the same. It’s the first time in 15 years that confidence in the media among older Americans has dropped below 40%.

Gallup attributes the drop in trust and confidence in the media to “the divisive presidential election” in which both Clinton and Trump have criticized the media for being biased, though there has been steady erosion in confidence taking place for more than a decade:

“Before 2004, it was common for a majority of Americans to profess at least some trust in the mass media, but since then, less than half of Americans feel that way. Now, only about a third of the U.S. has any trust in the Fourth Estate, a stunning development for an institution designed to inform the public.”

That was before the explosion of blogs, alternative websites and social media, which have exposed the mainstream media’s liberal agenda and made the public more aware of their bias.

I’ve always questioned “the media”, even from a young age and during my teens realized said people in the media were not being honest. Since then I’ve never trusted the media. The advent of the great ether has only reinforced my distrust.

This article lost its validity when it ended with “That was before the explosion of blogs, alternative websites and social media, which have exposed the mainstream media’s liberal agenda and made
the public more aware of their bias.”

So, it is a liberal agenda? There is no such a thing in the media, especially when considering the most watched news programs come from Fox News and the radio news shows are all nearly conservative voices. None of them do care about politics, they only care about ratings for profits (Fox, MSNBC, CNN, etals). And anything they can’t put forth that will have people listen and gasp at issues that have near zero to do with what is actually going on that affect us, they will do so.

Hmmmm….what “news” network dominates in the ratings? Oh yeah! It’s Fox “News”. When Fox “News” isn’t spewing BS propaganda, it’s telling its viewers how all other news outlets are biased. Is it any wonder that confidence in the media is at an all time low? (Oh, btw, sites like this one make it much, much worse, not better.)

The two worst things that have happened to public discourse in this country over the last, oh, 35 years, were when Reagan ended the Fairness Doctrine and when a poll was conducted showing that a slight majority of reporters tended to be on the left side of the aisle. These events, coupled with the right wing repeating it 87,332,000 times, led a large chunk of the population to believe in this nonsense. The poll was completely bogus, of course, because reporters don’t generally dictate what gets covered and they don’t edit their own pieces. The media is 100% controlled by either large conglomerates (overwhelmingly right wing, as corporations tend to be) or by right wing a**holes (Fox). The media generally sucks. But it sucks because it long ago decided to prioritize profits over information. Calling it “liberal” is a sick joke.

  • Reporters AND editors have admitted it themselves that they are almost exclusively liberal in outlook. And the “Fairness Doctrine” was the biggest impediment to fair debate since the Red Scare. “Right wing ” corporations? Sure; CBS, NBC, ABC, and NPR are really right-wing, huh? You really shouldn’t talk until you know what you’re talking about, Sandwich. And the Washington Post, New York Times and the Los Angeles Times are all right-wing too, huh? The joke isn’t sick, the liberals are.

“Reporters AND editors have admitted it themselves that they are almost exclusively liberal in outlook.”

That’s quite simply a lie. You idiots just make this stuff up.

“And the “Fairness Doctrine” was the biggest impediment to fair debate since the Red Scare.”

Not a lie, I guess. Just the dumbest thing I’ve seen written on the internet in months.

“Sure; CBS, NBC, ABC, and NPR are really right-wing, huh?”

Who owns CBS, NBC and ABC, dummy? Learn something before you shoot your fool mouth off. (I’ll give you NPR. But if you watch it, you’ll see plenty of shows funded by right wing foundations and think tanks.)

“And the Washington Post, New York Times and the Los Angeles Times are all right-wing too, huh?”

No. But they sure as s**t aren’t liberal, either.

Thank you for giving me a perfect example of a low-IQ, misinformed right wing idiot. You make my case for me.

Fox dominates the CABLE ratings, not the broadcast ratings. The cable networks are not in the same class as NBC, ABC, and CBS. When you add the major print media, trying to deny the press has a liberal bias is denying reality.

Is Fox blameless? Of course not, They have been less than neutral at times, but their “hard” news shows are just that. Their nightly lineup of “opinion” shows can be tiring, especially Hannity (and formerly Greta) but Brit Hume is an honest broker, and their special report show is also. Remember, Fox started as a reaction to liberal domination of the media, and I get a kick out of the way liberal/progressives hate the fact that there’s an alternative.

The bottom line here is the lack of trust in the media. All the media has to sell is honest reporting, and they prostituted their honor for politics. Now they have nothing.

  • John_In_Michigan

Take a look at the polls of the media. They freely admit it. Look where most of the “journalists” come from. Half of them either worked for Democrats or are married to them.

  • John_In_Michigan

The greatest bias used to be not in what was said, but what was covered. Editorial discretion protected the left for a generation. Now even their language shows contempt for conservatives, and not just the alt. right crowd.

  • IronChefSandwiches

“trying to deny the press has a liberal bias is denying reality.”

Categorically and demonstrably false. You know, people have actually done studies to measure this. The conclusions are always the same. If anything, the mainstream outlets edge a little bit towards the right. But facts and studies and evidence mean nothing in the face of 30 years of the “liberal” media myth, do they?

Bottom line. The media sucks. But not because of any political bias. It sucks because 30 or so years ago, it decided to put profits over prestige. It’s been a race to the lowest common denominator ever since. A charlatan like Trump would have been openly mocked 40 years ago. Today he’s taken seriously by most of the media and openly rooted for on Fox “New”. So…no. You’re wrong and the evidence proves it.

  • IronChefSandwiches

I HAVE looked. YOU haven’t. “Half of them either worked for Democrats or are married to them.” That sentence right there shows you have no idea what you’re talking about. Like most people who read AIM for reasons other than to make fun of it, you are woefully misinformed. Sorry, but it’s true.

    Show me your studies.

  • Mark81150crafty hamster o doom

studies conducted by liberals, paid for by liberals.. gee.. no agenda there right?… tool.

  • IronChefSandwiches

Well, let’s see. I’m using fact-based evidence and you’re using innuendo and idiocy. Who’s got the agenda here? It’s not me.

  • John_In_Michigan

Or you can’t defend your position. Even a study by NPR showed an overwhelming liberal bias. Don’t you at least have a study by one wild-eyed liberal prof to back you up, or are you just lazy?

The media is simple a tool of the establishment. People know what is going on. People know about the secret government. The unbelievable pandering that Hillary Clinton gets from the media proves she is the choice of the establishment. Don’t vote for her.
