Apples and oranges! Comparing the looking at key words written on one’s palm and comparing it to someone who reads every single word of every speech straight from a teleprompter is inane. (cf. stage prompting: In the theater a prompter only reminds the actor of the first words of a line or phrase now and then.) In fact, Pres. Obama reads so religiously and so obviously from teleprompters that he has been labeled by many as “LOOK-LEFT, LOOK-RIGHT, Look-Right Obama,” belying all the partisan claims of great speaking skills attributed to Obama—it’s rare that he ever looks straight ahead at the center of his audience, i.e., at the people sitting directly before him (perhaps he is in dire need of a “center” teleprompter!). It is becoming increasingly obvious also that Pres. Obama seems to think that the American people will accept his constant substitution of speech for action: The polls indicate otherwise. I personally don’t think that Pres. Obama is a great speaker as to me his speeches are exceeding sophomorish—but, at the least, if one insists, call him at most a “great reader” of the lines written for him!
