FBI Does Twitter

By Don  |  May 2, 2009

The FBI has joined the microblogging site twitter.

From the Politico

There's been a lot of chatter about the government using Twitter, much of it overstated -- often, it's just another channel for press releases.

The FBI, though, appears to be doing something a bit more interesting, Chuck Thies notes.

When a Twitter user wrote "Roh-oh, looking at an email in my spam folder from Federal Bureau of Investigations saying, "Message from FBI." Dare I delete?", the FBI Press Office replied, using Twitter conventions, "Yes, you dare.. and report it to our internet crime complaint center: http://www.ic3.gov."

They're not working government hours either: Responding to Twitter chatter about the incident, the FBI's Twitterer wrote just now, "We are just trying to interact (not 'watch') with those who use social media."

Could an FBI hashtag be far behind?

There’s no doubt that a lot of crime and criminal behavior originates on the Internet.
