Accuracy in Media

Facebook announced yesterday that they are partnering with several organizations to try and stop the spread of fake news that has become so pervasive on the Internet.

The organizations—ABC News, the Associated Press, FactCheck.org, Snopes and Politifact—all have one thing in common—they all lean left. Not a conservative or middle of the road fact-checking organization among them.

Facebook News Feed vice president Adam Mosseri said in a statement, “We’ve focused our efforts on the worst of the worst, on the clear hoaxes spread by spammers for their own gain, and on engaging both our community and third party organizations.”

In order to do this Facebook will be taking several steps, including allowing users to flag a hoax, or fake news story, and flag a story as disputed—the latter which will be fact-checked by Facebook’s above named partners.

“If the fact checking organizations identify a story as fake, it will get flagged as disputed and there will be a link to the corresponding article explaining why. Stories that have been disputed will also appear lower in News Feed. It will still be possible to share these stories, but you will see a warning that the story has been disputed as you share. Once a story is flagged, it can’t be made into an ad and promoted, either,” Mosseri wrote in his statement.

Facebook will also attempt to put an end to fake news that is profit-motivated by eliminating the ability to spoof domains, i.e., creating fake domains that look legitimate, and by analyzing publisher sites to make sure they aren’t generating fake news.

ABC News president James Goldston told The Wrap that despite Facebook’s efforts, stopping fake news will take some time:

“I think this could be a long battle, but you have to start somewhere and I think this is a good attempt to make a meaningful dent in it and to start to deal with the issue,” he said. “I don’t think any of us think there is a quick or easy fix.”

Facebook’s efforts look more like a public relations ploy to try to quiet criticism of the proliferation of fake news on its platform. But by excluding conservative organizations from the fact-checking syndicate, it only reinforces the notion that Facebook is anti-conservative, and is only interested in eliminating fake news that’s contradictory to the liberal point of view.

The complaint that PolitiFact, et al, “lean left” comes solely from the fact that they dare to fact-check conservatives. Irvine cannot name a credible conservative fact-checking org because conservative orgs put their politics before fairly examining the facts.

More left wing projection. Its the left wing MSM that is the biggest source of fake news and has been for many years and this is censorship of anyone who tries to call them out. Be it hands up don’t shoot, or whatever. And yes, those are left wing fake news backer sites for the most part. There are very few sites or organizations that are neutral. I fully expect a left wing derogatory response that is an ad hominem to try and shut down any counter views.

Since the majority of ‘news’ feeds are liberal, I’m guessing the only news these guys are interested in suppressing is the small number of places that disagree with the truly fake news stories the liberals insist on pushing on everyone. Example: Liberals still not getting over losing the election, still trying to convince people Hillary is a sane human being, still trying to convince everyone that, the twin towers, the Colorado theater shooting, Sandy Hook, the Boston bombing, the church shooting and the gay night club shooting were all real instead of attempts to get us to give up our guns freely and without fuss. Oh and then there is that ever popular rant of there being no such thing as voter fraud in the US, I love that one, no matter how much of it gets uncovered, they just keep singing that old tired song.

I don’t read the newsfeeds on Fakebook, as I know they slant left. Now the left-wing media bias will become even more one-sided. I’ll stick with the social aspects of the site, as I don’t trust any source of liberal media when it comes to news.

They ought to work on stopping their fake ads – It’s amazing that people who want to represent public censorship – fake news , fake advertisement and the political tyranny of policing the media through EU commands and continue to think they can get into U.S. politics and be accepted as a democratic source or representation ! Their affiliates should only pay Facebook on the bases of registered Democratic Voter clicks to equalize their non sense ! Merkel is looking for new politicians to follow her in Europe and grow their communist seed there !

  • NonPCconservative

It’s not about “fake” news. They want to rid the world of any conservative viewpoints, fake or not.

‘Fakebook’. I like it. They bake the facts to cook up a lie called ‘make believe’ FAKE. The establishment can’t make me believe anything is fake, except for the establishment itself which is both fake and a fraud, and ‘make believe’. Fantasy that!.

  • sox83cubs84

One Disqus poster called them Fecesbook. A little clumsier to say than Fakebook, but still spot on. Thanks for your approval.

You cannot change the mind of a lefty. Their plots for mankind are sinister, all encompassing and laid in concrete. It is not possible to crack their opinion with flexible facts. They remain of the same programmed opinion, no matter what, because they are incapable of originality of thought. Fresh thinking to them is a stale thought.

Oh boy this is like CNN and MSNBC telling everyone we never put FAKE NEWS out into the world. You can trust us !!
It seems that Trump or some other big buck conservative will now have to create a new conservative version of facebook. So here we go there has to be another Fox news to replace Facebook online.

Apparently, in Kinkaid’s world, he finds that ALL true facts “lean Left”. One might therefore have to assume that this is truly a left-of-center society and culture, wouldn’t one?

  • justmewhoelse12

Well if you want to flag fake news, use fake fact checkers.

Mark Zuckerberg, wanna be midget dictator. Evil he is. As is Facebook

  • Suzanne (Susie) M. Price

My friend, with my help, has an extensive list of the fake sites.

  • bcliff

One problem is that the left likes to fact check OPINION. Therein lies a big part of the problem.

  • Angee

Snopes is one of the most disreputable in accurate verification of facts. How is Face Book associating with it?

  • tkrepel

No ad hominem necessary, since you don’t bother to respond to what I said. AIM itself is guilty of reporting fake news by promoting the charlatan filmmaker Joel Gilbert. A website that promotes lies has no moral authority to judge the accuracy of others (despite that word being a part of AIM’s name).

  • Scrap Iron

Yes, I did but you failed to understand and in any case ad hominems are not a proper response. To be more clear, Politico is not a genuine fact checker but just another left wing fake news spin site in a multi-layer approach of spinning falsehoods. And the best lies involve slipping in non-critical truths and non controversial truths to create an appearance of credibility for the lies that are hidden within. This is true for pretty much if not all the fact checkers. I have yet to see one with good objectivity. That is not to say that there are not any right leaning sites that put forth nonsense but the left does it many many times more over. This is about censorship and blocking debate / critical thought
