Accuracy in Media

20151111_tedcruz2015Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who is one of the least liked Republican candidates by the liberal media, called out The New York Times for its obsession with his presidential campaign, after Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo asked him about a loan he made to his senate campaign in 2012:

Bartiromo: Senator Cruz, the New York Times is reporting that you failed to properly disclose a million dollars in loans from Goldman Sachs and CitiBank. During your senate race, your campaign said, ‘it was inadvertent.’ A million dollars is inadvertent?

Cruz: Well Maria, thank you for passing on that hit piece in the front page of The New York Times. You know the nice thing about the mainstream media, they don’t hide their views. The New York Times a few weeks back had a columnist who wrote a column saying, ‘Anybody But Cruz.’ Had that actually — that same columnist wrote a column comparing me to an evil demonic spirit from the move, ‘It Follows’ that jumps apparently from body to body possessing people.

So you know The New York Times and I don’t have exactly have the warmest of relationships. Now in terms of their really stunning hit piece, what they mentioned is when I was running for senate — unlike Hillary Clinton, I don’t have masses of money in the bank, hundreds of millions of dollars. When I was running for senate just about every lobbyist, just about all of the establishment opposed me in the senate race in Texas and my opponent in that race was worth over 200 million dollars. He put a 25 million dollar check up from his own pocket to fund that campaign and my wife Heidi and I, we ended up investing everything we owned.

We took a loan against our assets to invest it in that campaign to defend ourselves against those attacks. And the entire New York Times attack — is that I disclosed that loan on one filing with the United States Senate, that was a public filing. But it was not on a second filing with the FEC and yes, I made a paperwork error disclosing it on one piece of paper instead of the other. But if that’s the best The New York Times has got, they better go back to the well.

The real issue for the Times, though, wasn’t really the loan reporting. It was the fact that the loans came from Citibank and Goldman Sachs—where Heidi Cruz worked prior to her husband’s senate run—which the Times thought was hypocritical since Cruz has accused Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street firms of crony capitalism.

But there really isn’t anything unusual about the loans. It’s common practice for an employee on Wall Street to maintain an account with their employer, and in this case they pledged the assets in their account as collateral for the loan, also not unusual on Wall Street.

For a cash-starved first time candidate who wasn’t given any kind of chance to win, it was the only way Cruz could raise the much needed funds for his campaign. That’s not hypocrisy, that’s reality.

While the Times didn’t get their scalp this time, it probably won’t be long before they go after Cruz again, especially if he continues to rise in the polls.

WOW, this is an old story. With the Democratic debates being held last night I would have thought that there would be plenty to report on that.

  • missieb2000

My question is– why does any politician spend millions for a job that pays so little in comparison? Unless of course, they plan to make it back somehow, like Reid, Pelosi, and others have?

  • TPS12

So the times goes after Cruz for a million dollar personal loan but didn’t think going after hillary for 6 Billion dollars of taxpayer money lost on her watch was important?

  • AND this IS sourced. In the last three years the one person who has made more money in terms of billions of dollars is…are you ready or do you already know…JOHN KERRY.

  • No, TPS12, Hillary, during Benghazi, was awful busy. She had to buy china, cutlery and wine and water china glasses for our VIENNESE EMBASSY that was bought and paid for with our tax dollars, without our permission…taxation without representation…and we will never be able to use. Now that is SO HILLARY.

Sounds like the Money Honey is just as left-wing as Katie Couric, Whoopi Goldberg and Andrea Mitchell.

Substitute “New” in New York with “Jew” and you get the real gist of Cruz’ mindset. This guy is a flaming hypocrite going off to New York to tap into Goldman Sachs, his wife’s employer, no less, and he’s taking shots at New York with a sneer that couldn’t be mistaken for anything else but a wholesale broadsided attack on the New York area’s political cosmopolitan views, er, it’s “liberal,” “pro-abortion” views, etc. and of course that fav-o-rite whipping boy of the cherry pickers in Bible Christianityland way down in Texas, the New (or in Cruz style Newwwww York Tahms) which in his little world, every body knows is run by and for liberal northeastern urban Jews, particularly those living in the greater Tri-State area.
How dumb could this foreigner be to attack one of the greatest religious bodies (through its practitioners who have done so much to make New York one of THE most civilized cities on the planet) and expect enough people across the rest of the land to let his sneering but underhanded attack not only on the city’s Jewish population, but others as well, as Ms. Bartilomo, of Italian heritage, rightly and smartly pointed out in her reply?
And no Teddy, we’re not going to forget your other ties with the Northeast, Princeton and Harvard, though located both north and south of the Big Apple, nevertheless play a major role in helping the northeast retain its well deserved supremacy when it comes to education, tolerance, exhange of ideas, and some of them include, even some pretty damn good economic ideas. Ted, if you want to be the king of a third world state, hell, Texas is your place. But y’oughta be a little more circumspect when it comes to talking about “New York values” when the ones in Texas have shown so much to be lacking for.

  • Ken

Maybe the 6 billion went to countries that promised to return it (illegally) to her camaign? Isn’t that pretty much what happened? If they had anything real on Cruz, he would already be in jail.

  • AndRebecca

Ted wants to be president of Obama’s third world state, America. Obama is doing everything he can to turn the USA into a third world country. Hopefully, Ted can reverse that process. Ted went into the belly of the beast, the northeast liberal establishment, to learn how to kill it.

  • Steven Barrett

It’s late, real late and I don’t know how to reply to this w/o laughing my head off which would then wake my wife up and Rebecca, Ted Cruz isn’t worth getting my ears chewed off for, no matter how tempted I am to let loose. Gotta hand it to you righties, even when you don’t intend to betray any sense of humor … it’s there and stumbles out; just like Ted reading Dr. Seuss on the Senate Floor.

  • missieb2000

Leave Becky out of it and go on to sleep, then. Have to give it to you trolls, when you make up pretend lives to fill your sad, pathetic existence-at least you give details.

  • P. Kathy Kleiman

Cruz is just honest. You have the power to continue these horrendous practices of executive orders, making Congress irrelevant and instead having these alphabet soup agencies make up the law that is only promoting the agendas of radical leftists. But that is the choice we are going to have to make. Do you believe, as Ted does that you are born with certain inalienable rights such as individual freedoms, no warrentless searches, stopping civil forfeitures, limiting the size and scope of government, a strong national defense and the 2nd amendment as well as all of our rights cannot be taken away with a pen and paper? Do you believe in life>Or do you believe you in bigger government, the “We know better for you than you do” mentality, higher taxation, and out of control regulatory system that has proven to be criminal from the top down, and that society, not the individual, gives you your rights? These are the choices. Trump is a wild card. If he is deceiving us there will be four more years of the same or worse. We know what Cruz has done, stood alone against the establishment and the status quo in the Republican party. He won’t back down to lobbyists on K-Street, in fact, he exposed them to the American people. I know that some people just do not like the looks of some people, but we have on one hand a quasi-liberal New Yorker, an entertainer, perhaps he is only entertaining us? Positing on the anger we feel for being betrayed by Boehner and McConnell? Cruz, threw decorum to the wind and stood on the House floor and called McConnell a liar. What other nominee has done this? Trump didn’t even know what the nuclear triad was! We have someone who knows absolutely nothing about politics. He is unqualified and untried. Cruz is not. And lets not forget how Trump supposedly “paid” Hillary to go to his daughter’s wedding. He could be a mole for the Democrats. Boy would we be in trouble. People are fleeing New York’s state taxes, their regulations that are strangling businesses and the “We tell you what to do” attitude. Trump claims he has these views, he has said as much! Again, we have two choices. Whatever you think you may feel about Cruz, he has been tested and has proved true. So, the decision is up to you. Cruz is amassing money from grassroots people who are committing all of their time or money to his election all over the country, people like myself who cannot afford to donate, but have vetted him, tracked him from the time he was our Solicitor General, to his time in the Senate, which was a great thing to see him standing before all of Congress and calling them out on not defunding PPH, which, as he said, “should have been a 100-0 vote,” but because it is not in K-Street’s interests, the Republicans stood with the Democrats! He was the lone voice screaming that this was definitely not why he came to Washington and he knew that wasn’t why they came either. PPH is not even a government program, as is the EXIM< Corporate Welfare, where when they make money–they get rich, when they take a dive, the taxpayers pay and most people do not even know what the Export/Import bank is–corporate welfare and cronyism, just as Senator Obama said it was, but what President Obama used for his failed Solyendra and Fast Solar. When Cruz called McConnell out for being a "Liar," he had sworn in front of the entire Republican dinner that there was no secret agreement. He again told Cruz privately there was no secret agreement. Cruz's staff told him he was lying. After Cruz voted "Yea," he found out McConnell did stiff him and there was a secret agreement to continue the EXIM until 2019! Cruz went and changed his vote ASAP. I believe Trump would have voted for it. So, the choice is up to you. And Rubio is an establishment status quo, controlled by the Republican party and that is easily proven by his partnership with the most Liberal Senator you can have from New York, Chuck Schumer and RINO Lindsey Graham in the Gang of Eight for allowing this Executive Order on immigration stand. So, there you have it. Four to eight more years of the same, or even the worst, or four to eight years of a proven record of standing up to the Establishment. The choice is yours, but just remember, however you vote, your children and their children will be paying for this for a very long time. This world was given to me in a similar state of disaster, but I woke up so late in the game. Now it's spiraling faster. Leave to your children the promise of something more.

  • Hey, it worked, it called attention to what needed to be woken up. This establishment Republican party is as crooked as a winding road, thus we have people like myself, wanting the Republicans to go the way of the Whigs or the Tories, and just have two parties, Constitutional Conservatives and Liberal voting Democrats, i.e, the Communists. For what do you believe? That we all are born with inalienable rights that cannot be taken away? Or do you believe that you are born into a society which give you–or not–the rights you have? To me, that is slavery and if you like that “We know better than you do for what is best for you” mentality, then Comrade Putin would be happy to have defectors. For I refuse to be enslaved, what say you?

  • Please, do not leave out that psychopath Debbie Wassermann Schultz. Her mom must have taken some heavy duty LSD when she had that kid on her way to Woodstock.

  • Steven Barrett

Comrade Putin! Lawdy Kathy, from what I hear this guy’s got more stashed away than what Nicky and Alix had when the former signed it all away in his former fancy railroad car back some 99 years ago. I’ll admit to getting a lot of kicks from Sen. Green n’ Eggs n’ Ham it up a lot, but no way would I ever want to see the American conservatives take to aping their Brit counterparts in the way they’ve ganged up on The Donald in such a manner to demonstrate for all times that they haven’t learned a single thing from our War of Independence. They’re thicker than the French when it comes to this kind of political alzheimer’s.
The Canadian Cowboy Cruz got his chops smacked by both The Donald and Maria Bartiromo, but he stepped into it and his doublin’ down with his dumb anti-New York remarks should cost him dearly.
C’mon Missiebe, great to hear from you, but I’ve got news for ya, being a die hard fan of the Bronx Bombers and being fond of New York, with all respects, I think you’ve got me confused with the Orcs from New Amsterdam.

  • AndRebecca

Ah, I’m glad you got a laugh. I laughed when you stood up for the 1%ers in NY. There’s a long history of attacking New York values, but Ted thinks people like you might be smart enough to know that. He has “the smart problem.” He thinks others are a smart as he is, which isn’t true as you prove on a regular basis.

  • Steven Barrett

Ted’s got the “smart problem.” I’ll ponder that one for some good mirth-producing value, just as I’m having a few yucks at the panic party over in Clintonville where Hill’s Mizzou defender of all things American has gone full McCarthy. I’d rather see her pull out a list of 57 millionaires on Goldman Sach’s payroll who coughed up big bucks to hear Her Highness offer droplets of wisdom in the area of civic and pecuniary virtues. LOL, they’ll be droplet sized alright.
Have to give this to Ted; we can best be assured he’s damn glad he doesn’t have Trump’s Wasilla values problem blasting old cliches right past his ears, all the while the Lady Godzilla from Wasilla should’ve postponed her grand reentrance while the Palins’ son was dealing with an arrest for some kind of domestic violence offence, weapons offence (dealing with an AR15) and apparently horrible PTSD resulting from multiple tours in Iraq. Wonder what Track was thinking when his mom was calling for kicking “ISIS’ ass” as if it were another walk in some nature reserve to hunt down Bullwinkle. Prayers for the young man, and an acknowledgement that Ted can justifiably be thankful she’s The Mouth from Manhattan’s problem child this time around.

  • AndRebecca

    Have you been drinking?

  • Steven Barrett

Oh crap, somebody slipped some of that Flint Austerity Demon Water in my regular soda water. In ten years my mind will be as corroded as this year’s crop of GOP candidates.

  • AndRebecca

Your mind was corroded a long time ago. It will never remotely resemble the mind of a normal human being or an intelligent one.

  • Steven Barrett

Geesh, if only I started watching MSNBC before Fox, I wouldn’t have lost as much as you contend. Whathisface Insannity does a job on one’s mind. Thank God for Joe, Mika and Mike Barnicle whose columns in the Globe I read regularly while working in Boston during the mid to late seventies.

  • AndRebecca

    Thanks for the laugh!!!

  • Steven Barrett

At your service. Right now I could use some laughs as my Pats are going down. Sack cloth and ashes time. Well, there’s always the Puppy Bowl.
