Tuesday night’s cable television ratings underscored the need for new CNN president Jeff Zucker to reshape the network’s programming as sister network HLN topped its older sibling from 5-9 p.m. in the key A25-54 demographic.
It was bad enough to lose the lightly watched 5-7 p.m. hours, but CNN also lost two of the three hour primetime block (8-10 p.m.), with Nancy Grace beating Anderson Cooper at 8 p.m., and Dr. Drew (really?), topping Piers Morgan. CNN did manage to beat HLN at 10 p.m. in the second Cooper-Grace face off of the night. Overall HLN averaged 165,000 viewers in the demo during primetime while CNN attracted just 150,000 viewers.
To add insult to injury, HLN also topped CNN in total viewers in the 6 and 7 p.m. hours.
As I noted yesterday Zucker is moving rapidly to reshape CNN’s programming, but as these results show, he may want to move a little faster before the network loses any more ground.
