Last Thursday, the host of MSNBC’s Hardball, Chris Matthews, addressed the issue of race in America with NBC News VP/Creative Director Val Nicholas and former RNC chairman Michael Steele, who is a regular contributor to Matthews’ show. Nicholas recounted facing the barrel of a gun twice during his youth, and Steele weighed in with his own experiences of being a target, solely because of his race. That prompted Matthews to apologize to them on behalf of “all white people:”
I’m speaking now for all white people, especially those who tried to change over the past 50 or 60 years, and a lot have really tried to change. And I’m sorry for this stuff. That’s all I’m saying.
Matthews may have been weighed down by his liberal guilt, but that doesn’t give him the right to apologize on my behalf, or anyone else’s for that matter.
