I often participate in online fora on public policy matters. One of my favorite venues is Accuracy in Media, where right-wingers predominate overwhelmingly. I recently had an interesting, if rather chilling, experience on the AIM site. There was a discussion of Obamacare, as they put it.
I am a shameless pinko and defended the idea of government intervention in health care. The reception I got was pretty cool.
I explained to those doughty conservatives that I thought the free market might not be a good idea because excessive concern with the bottom line might render the preservation of human life and health a merely secondary goal.
And I recounted an experience I had once at a hospital in Virginia, where I was turned away from a hospital because I had no private insurance, although it later turned out that I was very ill, and I could have easily died as a result of being refused medical care. I explained that this was a real danger, and therefore at least some government intervention was desirable.
That didn’t make much of an impression on the conservative majority. They deprecated my concerns, clearly implying that MY DEATH WAS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY TO KEEP GOVERNMENT OUT OF HEALTH CARE! In other words, they INSISTED ON PRIVATE HEALTH CARE, REGARDLESS OF THE COST IN HUMAN LIVES.
So I have concluded that by and large, FREE-MARKET TRUE BELIEVERS ARE CONTEMPTUOUS OF HUMAN LIFE.
