Axelrod and Gibbs Promise They Won’t Be Obama Surrogates on MSNBC

Former Obama campaign advisers David Axelrod and Robert Gibbs told CNN’s Howard Kurtz that they have no intentions of being cheerleaders for the President in their new roles as MSNBC commentators.
Gibbs, who was Obama’s first press secretary and a senior adviser to his 2012 presidential campaign, told Kurtz that he sees his role as a political analyst.
I will be honest with my opinions and when I believe the White House has made a mistake I will say so. I’m sure no one in the White House thought my comments on Chuck Hagel’s confirmation hearing were necessarily pro-Obama.
Axelrod, who served as the White House senior adviser from 2009 to 2011 and as the Obama campaign’s senior strategist in 2008 and 2012, took a similar view, telling Kurtz his role will be one of a political analyst and not an Obama surrogate.
My role is not that of a surrogate, but an analyst and commentator. I’m proud of my work for and with the President. But in this role, I will offer observations, based on my experience over 35 years in journalism and politics, and will call them as I see them. I’d also note that NBC and MSNBC have, on their roster of analysts, both Republicans and Democrats.
There may be Republicans at MSNBC, but they aren’t exactly the strongest defenders of the party’s positions, or of a conservative agenda, which makes them nothing more than pawns in the network’s liberal-left agenda.
Despite the claims from Gibbs and Axelrod that they won’t be Obama surrogates, isn’t that why they were really hired? It will be hard for them not to be given the daily cheerleading that takes place on MSNBC for the President.
