A Senatorial Thanksgiving

By Don  |  November 26, 2009

Senators and Capitol Hill staff talk about Thanksgiving traditions.

From the Politico

Holidays are time for tradition and Capitol Hill folks have plenty of their own.

As Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) told POLITICO, he’s on dessert duty every year. “Indian pudding is a classic, old New England dish,” said Gregg of the cornmeal-based custard. “Sometimes nobody tries it, but I usually make it anyway.”

“We’re pretty traditional at our house. The most important thing is to get family together,” said Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) “We focus on the basics.” To see more, click the above video.

For those staying around, there's one tradition that Capitol Hill staffers know well: inviting the lonely intern over to share Thanksgiving dinner. The Hill can be a bustling place year-round, but it goes dark over the holidays, often leaving young, under-paid staffers alone for the long weekend.

That’s what happened to House Republican staffer Jeb Link, who said he couldn’t afford to go home to Colorado when he first started on the Hill several years ago. “I was stranded here and didn’t have anyone around. Someone invited me over and it was very much appreciated,” he said.

Now, he and his wife have returned the kindness. The couple have been sharing Turkey Day with young Hillers since they were engaged in 2005. “We love doing it. It’s our longstanding tradition,” said Link.

Link isn’t the only staffer with a good reason to stay in the District. Justin Harding, chief of staff to Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) will likely spend his Thanksgiving welcoming his fourth child. “If I’m not eating Thanksgiving compliments of the NOVA healthcare system, we’ve got a turkey breast in the freezer,” Harding said.

He and his wife have one boy and two girls, but Harding says the gender of the newest bundle will be a surprise.

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving day today.
